David Garcia Anaya
Violin
My name is David Garcia Anaya, and I'm originally from Tangancicuaro, Michoacan, Mexico. I started playing the violin when I was just 15 years old. My father was the one who motivated me to get started in the field of music; he was also a norteño musician. I have to admit that one of the obstacles in my life as a musician has been my shyness. I've learned to manage this problem somewhat now. Of course, it's been music that has helped me overcome my shyness. I still remember how my shyness used to make me nervous so that I would sweat a lot when I first started singing. That's how it all began. Over the years, I've learned music not only by watching and listening but also from my peers, including a trumpet player who was very patient with me. I've also been very patient, persistent, and dedicated, which has contributed to my continuous learning. I have been collaborating for many years with Professor Heriberto Torres Hernandez, co-director of AC DAMA, who has invited me to share my violin knowledge with his students. I want to conclude by saying that you should never let obstacles defeat you and that you should put in a lot of effort to achieve whatever you are passionate about and fight for it.

​Mi nombre es David Garcia Anaya, soy originario de Tangancicuaro Michoacan, Mexico. Comencé a tocar el violín cuando apenas tenía 15 años. Mi papá fue quien me motivó para que me iniciara en el campo de la música; él también fue músico de música norteña. Tengo que reconocer que uno de los obstáculos en mi vida como músico ha sido mi timidez. En la actualidad ya he aprendido a controlar un poco este problema. Por supuesto que ha sido a través de la música lo que me ha ayudado a superar el problema de mi timidez. Todavía recuerdo que fue precisamente la timidez lo que me hacía hasta sudar de nervios cuando apenas comenzaba a cantar. Así fue como comenzó todo. A través de los años he aprendido música no solamente viendo y escuchando sino también de mis compañeros incluyendo un trompetista quien me tuvo mucha paciencia. Yo personalmente también he tenido mucha paciencia, persistencia y dedicación lo cual ha contribuido a un continuo aprendizaje. Yo tengo muchos años colaborando con el profesor Heriberto Torres Hernandez codirector de AC DAMA quien me ha invitado a compartir con sus alumnos lo que yo sé de violín. Bueno quiero cerrar mi experiencia personal a que nunca se dejen vencer por los obstáculos y que redoblen esfuerzos para lograr cualquier cosa que los apasione y luchar por eso.
Artemio Magaña Alejo
Trumpet/ Trompeta
My name is Artemio Magaña Alejo. I have been a trumpet instructor for several years. AC DAMA has invited me to support their students since 1995, when it was formerly the Arcoiris group. I am originally from Chilchota, Michoacán. I had the opportunity to complete my secondary education there. Currently, I am one of the directors of Mariachi México, and we have the privilege of bringing joy with our music throughout the Yakima Valley and surrounding cities. I started playing the trumpet when I was fifteen years old. Since band music is very popular where I'm from, that obviously motivated me to choose the trumpet. One of the obstacles I faced in the process of mastering the trumpet was a lack of discipline; I didn't have a set routine. I've developed such a passion for this instrument that if I could go back in time, I would choose the trumpet again. Like all musicians, I've had my share of unpleasant experiences throughout my life as a musician; for example, when we're performing and several people request different songs at the same time, and sometimes we're not entirely sure which song we're going to play, and we all end up starting with a different one.If I were asked for advice on how to succeed in the music industry, I would say that a person should expose themselves to as much music as possible, meaning they should listen to mariachi music daily. This will allow them not only to become familiar with the mariachi repertoire but also to develop a taste for the music of this genre. Finally, I want to share that most musicians are always inspired by some group; in my case, I always admired a mariachi group from my Purépecha region, Mariachi Ordaz.

​Mi nombre es Artemio Magaña Alejo. He sido instructor de trompeta desde hace varios años. AC DAMA me ha invitado a apoyar a sus estudiantes desde 1995 cuando anteriormente era el grupo Arcoiris. Soy originario de Chilchota estado de Michoacán. En mi lugar de origen tuve la oportunidad de cursar la educación media. En la actualidad soy uno de los directivos del mariachi México y tenemos el privilegio de alegrar con nuestra música en todo el valle de Yakima y ciudades circunvecinas. Comencé a tocar la trompeta cuando apenas tenía quince años. En vista de que en mi lugar de origen la música de banda es muy popular, obviamente eso me motivó a iniciarme en este instrumento. Uno de los obstáculos que tuve en el proceso de dominar la trompeta fue la falta de disciplina, es decir no tenía una rutina preestablecida. He desarrollado tanta pasión por este instrumento que si volviera atrás en el tiempo, volvería a elegir la trompeta otra vez. Como todos los músicos, no he sido la excepción en tener experiencias desagradables en el transcurso de mi vida como músico; un ejemplo es cuando estamos en una presentación y varias personas piden canciones diferentes al mismo tiempo y a veces no estamos seguros en última instancia cuál canción se va a tocar y comenzamos todos con una diferente canción. Si me pidieran un consejo sobre que hacer para tener éxito en el ámbito de la música, yo diría que la persona se exponga a tanta música como sea posible, es decir que escuche música de maríachi a diario, lo cual le permitirá no solamente familiarizarse con el repertorio del género de mariachi, sino que desarrolla el gusto por la música propia de este género. Por último quiero compartir que la mayoría de los músicos siempre se inspiran en algún grupo; en mi caso yo siempre sentí admiración por un mariachi de mi región Purépecha, el mariachi Ordaz.
